Assin Manso is a historic town located in the Assin North Municipal Assembly of the Central Region of Ghana, about 40 kilometres along the Cape Coast–Kumasi highway. The town is renowned for the pivotal role it played during the transatlantic slave trade.
It served as a major slave market and a significant transit point where enslaved Africans, after enduring long treks from the northern parts of the country, rested and bathed at the Slave River, locally known as “Nnonkor Suo.” This was their last bath before being marched to the coastal forts and castles for shipment across the Atlantic to the Americas.
Because of this deep historical connection, Assin Manso holds a unique place not only in Ghana’s history but also in world history. Today, it has become a prominent heritage tourism destination, especially for visitors tracing the painful but important memories of the slave trade. The Slave River site complements visits to the nearby forts and castles along the coast, making Assin Manso one of the most sought-after stops on the cultural and historical tourism circuit of Ghana.
