Accra, Ghana — The Ghana Tourism Development Company (GTDC) has outlined an ambitious strategy to transform Ghana’s tourism sector through digital innovation, strategic investment, infrastructure development and stronger private-sector participation.
Speaking in an interview on Joy News, Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Tourism Development Company, Professor Kobi Mensah, highlighted the Company’s mandate and outlined key initiatives aimed at positioning Ghana as a more competitive tourism destination in Africa.
GTDC’s Role in Ghana’s Tourism Development
Professor Mensah explained the distinction between the Ghana Tourism Development Company and the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA).
While the GTA primarily focuses on tourism regulation, standards and international promotion, the GTDC has a commercial and investment-oriented mandate. The Company is responsible for developing and commercialising tourism products, mobilising investment and working with the private sector to unlock the economic potential of Ghana’s tourism assets.
According to Professor Mensah, this approach is intended to move Ghana beyond simply promoting tourism destinations towards developing tourism as a sustainable and commercially viable industry.
Digital Transformation at the Centre of GTDC’s Strategy
A major part of the Company’s strategy is the development of two digital platforms designed to make Ghana’s tourism ecosystem more accessible to investors, businesses and travellers.
Ghana Tourism Investment Platform
The Ghana Tourism Investment Platform is being developed as a one-stop digital platform for showcasing investment opportunities across Ghana’s tourism sector.
The platform will provide information on investable tourism sites while highlighting important infrastructure considerations such as roads, water, electricity and other facilities required for investment.
By making this information more accessible, GTDC aims to improve transparency, support investor decision-making and attract both local and international capital into Ghana’s tourism industry.
Ghana Tourism Marketplace
The Ghana Tourism Marketplace will serve as a digital marketplace where travellers can discover and book tourism-related services, including hotels, car rentals, tours and event tickets.
The platform is expected to improve convenience for travellers while creating new opportunities for tourism businesses to reach customers and generate revenue through digital channels.
The initiative also supports GTDC’s broader objective of strengthening domestic tourism and increasing Ghana’s ability to capture more value from international visitors.
A Three-Pronged Approach to Tourism Growth
Professor Mensah described GTDC’s strategy as a “three-pronged approach” built around infrastructure, marketing and institutional support.
The first priority is developing and improving the infrastructure required to make tourism destinations more accessible and attractive.
The second is implementing a strong digital marketing strategy, with a particular focus on search engines and online visibility. This will help Ghanaian tourism products compete for the attention of travellers searching for experiences and destinations online.
The third component is building a strong support backbone for the tourism ecosystem. This includes systems that can improve service delivery and provide the necessary support for visitors and tourism businesses.
Bringing Stakeholders Together
GTDC is also engaging stakeholders across the tourism industry to ensure that its digital initiatives respond to the needs of businesses and industry players.
A major stakeholder engagement event, Big Tourism Conversation, is scheduled to bring together key players to provide feedback and contribute to the development and implementation of the new digital systems.
The engagement reflects GTDC’s commitment to building tourism solutions through collaboration between government, private-sector operators, investors and other stakeholders.
Positioning Ghana as a Leading African Tourism Destination
Looking ahead, Professor Mensah emphasised the need for Ghana to strengthen its competitiveness in the African tourism market.
He pointed to countries such as South Africa and Kenya as examples of markets Ghana can learn from while developing its own competitive advantages.
The future of Ghana’s tourism sector, he noted, will depend increasingly on the ability to leverage data, technology and artificial intelligence, while empowering the private sector to invest and innovate.
Through its digital platforms, investment initiatives and stakeholder partnerships, GTDC is working towards a more modern, accessible and commercially driven tourism ecosystem.
The goal is clear: to unlock Ghana’s tourism potential, attract investment, improve the visitor experience and position Ghana as a globally competitive tourism destination.
